Chest drains.

It is necessary that drainage tubes are placed around your heart at the end of the operation and whilst you are still sedated. (see photo of chest scar on ‘What now’?)

These are connected to a bottle and allow any blood which may have collected around your heart to be removed.

The drained blood is observed by staff as it is deposited into the bottle, and when it subsides, the drains will be removed.

Removal may take place on Intensive care or later on the main ward.
