PAIN

Pain and sickness are normal reaction to major surgery. Pain and/or discomfort can be felt  when breathing or coughing. This can be in both your chest and your back. Your leg will also be tender and painful and I found that the discomfort in this area lasted the longest.

However, as deep breathing is an important part of the recovery process, it is the aim that pain be kept as low as possible. Medication will be given which should keep discomfort to the minimum.

It is usual that a scale of 0 to 5 be used for you to describe your pain. 0 = No pain and 5 = Worst possible pain. Try and use this to describe your condition to staff. They will be anxious that all assistance is given to make you as comfortable as possible.
